Changes occurring when a direct speech is converted into a reported one:
1.Time expressions
2. Place expressions
3. Verb tenses
Examples:
1. “We had a forest fire last year,” said the ranger. (Direct)
→ The ranger said they had had a forest fire the year before/the previous year. (Indirect)
2. “Technological advances will transform the way we learn,” said one expert. (Direct)
→ One expert said that technological advances would transform the way we learned/learn. (Indirect)
Examples:
1. “How can we stop soil erosion?” one farmer asked the expert. (Direct)
→ One farmer asked the expert how they could stop soil erosion. (Indirect)
2. Josh: - Did you catch sight of any wild animal on your last eco-tour, Andy? (Direct)
→ Josh asked Andy if/whether he had caught sight of any wild animal on his last eco-tour. (Indirect)
