1. Activity 1:  Situation setting

a/ Listening to and practicing the dialogue 

- have ss listen to the CD and practice the dialogue in pairs  ( 3 minutes) and have them call out its  main content

b/ Comprehension check – TRUE/ FALSE/ NOT GIVEN  ( in pairs)

1. Sam is part of an extended family.

2. Ann is part of a nuclear family.

3. Ann’s grandparents look after their grandchildren.

4. Ann’s grandma thinks that all family members should share housework.

5. Ann’s grandpa wants her to do the same job and things in life as he did.

2. Activity 2:  Vocabulary ( noun compounds)

-conduct the choral repetition task ( the highlighted compound nouns)

-have ss do the gap-fill task  ( complete the definitions)

3. Activitiy 3: Grammar ( Some modal verbs)

Tell Ss to refer back to the conversation to find the verbs/ used to express  duty, obligation, advice or lack of obligation

I. OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson , students will be able to :
- get an overall view of 
 + the topic of the whole unit “ the generation gap” 
 that they are going to be taught in the unit through a dialogue ( accompanied by a comprehension task – questions and answers)
- have some practice with the vocabulary items
extended family/ nuclear family/ generation gap/ table manners/ viewpoint/childcare/conservative/ open-minded/ narrow-minded/ impose on/ conlict

+ having someone around when parents are out
+ learning useful skills (communication skill/ respect for the elderly/ cooking/ tidying the house)
+having different viewpoints
